How meal kits work
You pick recipes from a weekly menu, choose how many you want and for how many people, and a box arrives with the exact ingredients pre-portioned plus a printed recipe card. There is no planning, no shopping list and very little waste, because you only get what each recipe needs. Most meals take 20 to 40 minutes to cook and assume you already have oil, salt and pepper at home.
What a meal kit really costs
The "first box half price" deals are not the number that matters - the full price once those wear off is. At a four-recipe box for four people, the mainstream kits work out at roughly £3.80 to £7 a portion: Gousto and HelloFresh are cheapest at scale, Green Chef and Mindful Chef the priciest. Two things inflate the real cost. Small two-person boxes cost noticeably more per head, and most kits add a delivery charge of around £4 to £6 to every box. As a rough guide, a family of four doing three dinners a week should budget £45 to £85, and a couple doing three dinners £25 to £45.
How to choose a meal kit
Five things separate them:
- Recipe choice - Gousto has the largest weekly menu (around 75 recipes), with HelloFresh close behind. The diet-focused kits offer fewer but more specialised options.
- Servings - most do boxes for two or four people. Gousto and Mindful Chef also do single portions, while Green Chef only offers two or four.
- Dietary range - Gousto and Green Chef are the broadest; Mindful Chef is gluten- and dairy-free by default; Grubby is fully vegan.
- Flexibility - all let you skip and cancel, but only Gousto offers genuine one-off orders without a subscription.
- Delivery - check the charge and whether your postcode is covered. The Scottish Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland are often excluded.
The main UK meal kits at a glance
- Gousto - the widest menu and best value at larger boxes, and the most flexible.
- HelloFresh - the biggest brand, generous portions, a safe first try.
- Green Chef - the widest diet range, including keto, at a premium.
- Mindful Chef - premium, gluten- and dairy-free by default, strong ethics.
- Grubby - the leading fully vegan recipe kit.
- The Cookaway - chef-led world cuisines with no subscription; a treat rather than a weekly plan.
Meal kit, or something else?
A meal kit makes sense if you want to cook but hate the planning and shopping. If you already shop for fresh food and just want ideas, a cheaper recipe or spice kit does the job for less. If you do not want to cook at all, a ready-meal service fits better. And if you mainly want a weekly fruit-and-veg top-up, look at veg boxes.
Who meal kits suit
They are best for busy households that want more varied home-cooked food without the mental load, and for anyone learning to cook. They are poor value for one person, for very tight budgets, or if you want zero effort in the kitchen.
Frequently asked questions
Are meal kits cheaper than the supermarket?
No - a like-for-like shop at a budget supermarket is cheaper. You pay a premium for the convenience, pre-portioning and recipe variety, plus delivery. Meal kits can save money against takeaways or food you would otherwise waste, but not against a careful supermarket shop.
Which meal kit is best for beginners?
HelloFresh and Gousto are the easiest starting points - large menus, clear recipe cards and simple steps. Mindful Chef is also quick, with most meals ready in around 20 minutes.
Can you really cancel a meal kit any time?
Yes. None of the major kits tie you into a contract - you can skip weeks or cancel before the weekly cut-off. You do need to manage your account to avoid being sent (and charged for) boxes you did not want.
Do meal kits create a lot of waste?
Very little food waste, because ingredients are pre-portioned to the recipe. Packaging is the downside - most kits use some plastic, though Green Chef and Mindful Chef use fully recyclable packaging.
